Welcome to Half Earth NC

We are living at the dawn of  the Anthropocene, and the sixth great extinction event.  If we are informed and aware of the state of the climate, it can be pretty hard to find hope.  Most climate media coverage that we see, is focused on cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and rightly so.  After all, abundant and energy dense fossil fuels enabled the Industrial Revolution, and  lead us to  this massive problem we now face.

But even if we could cut net emissions to zero, we would still need to draw down the greenhouse gases that are already in the atmosphere.  Technology offers us some potential solutions to sequester carbon from the atmosphere, but none are cost effective, nor as efficient, nor as beautiful, as simply allowing the earth's natural systems to heal the planet.  

Protecting half of the planet for nature is, no doubt, an ambitious proposal, but so is everything we need to do to prevent a global catastrophe.  We need bold action now, and we need all hands on deck.
